Courtney was always a different type of person, when she was 12 she auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club but she did not make the show because she used a poem by Sylvia Plath that reflected suicidal thoughts. Courtney was a visitor in many schools and soon became a frequent visitor in juvenile halls and reform schools.
Courtney’s first rock and roll boyfriend was Rozz Rezabek and she was later rumored to have had an affair with Michael Mooney from Echo and the Bunneymen, an affair he denies. Courtney began working all over the world in places like Japan, Taiwan, Guam and L.A where she worked as a stripper.
In 1987, Courtney returned to California and along with her friend Kat Bjelland, they formed their first band, but it did not last. They tried forming another band but again that band failed. She met and married James Moreland from the band Leaving Trains. But that marriage did not last and the marriage was annulled.
Courtney formed another all girl group with Kat called Sugar Baby Doll in addition to the band was Jennifer Finch. They never had any of their materials publicly released. She tried her hand at acting in 1986 where she had a little more success. Her music career was jumpstarted again when she briefly fronted the band Faith No More.
In 1989, Courtney taught herself to play the guitar and set out to form her own band Hole. Hole was a grunge, alternative band that did very well and released eight albums to date. She met Kurt Cobain of the alternative rock group Nirvana with whom she had a daughter Frances Bean.
